School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships in NSW

What are they?

A school based apprenticeship and traineeship combines paid work, training and school.

The traineeship provides an industry recognised national qualification and credit towards the HSC

A school based traineeship can give you a head start in your career, a head start in an apprenticeship and a head start at TAFE.

How does it work?

A School Based Traineeship combines off the job and on the job training.

The traineeship is completed at the same time as the HSC. You would start at the beginning of Year 11 and finish at the end of year 12.

You can even start your traineeship after your School Certificate exams in November.

The “on the job” training component will be undertaken in the workplace fo an average of one day a week.  Depending on your study schedule you may work during school, after school, on weekends and in school holidays.

The “off the job” training is completed either at school or TAFE, or with an approved Private Provider. All “off the job” training counts towards your HSC.

School Based Trainees must have….

  • paid work under an appropriate industrial arrangement.
  • a training contract signed by the employers and trainee, and approved by the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET).
  • a training plan that meets the requirements of the HSC and the relevant vocational training order (VTO).
